The Quilting Bee
QuiltingCoach Penny

Come to beautiful San Diego and enjoy waterfront learning!

Quilters from around the world will come to San Diego, California in March 2012 to learn quilting techniques that will make their quilt making easier and more fun.

This is not like a traditional quilt show where quilts are hung, vendors sell their wares and quilters stroll the aisles.

This is where quilters can come and learn about various aspects of quilting - from choosing the "ingredients" of their quilts (fabric, batting, thread) to understanding how to mix it up to create beautiful heirloom quilts, fun quilts for every day use, and wall hangings that will adorn those blank walls that are just waiting for something interesting.

The event will include short workshops conducted by experts in several quilting topics, booths hosted by manufacturers where quilters can see products and get their questions answered, and a traditional Quilting Bee.

In addition, VIP Attendees will be treated to an exclusive dessert reception the evening before the event begins, a Shop Hop of local quilt shops, and a reception and docent tour of Visions - the San Diego quilt museum.

The idea behind the Quilting Bee is that quilters will bring their quilts and share in the group quilting experience just like quilters did decades ago (and continue to participate in today).

The Quilting Bee itself will be held one day during the event and will be open to quilters who want to either attend and quilt their quilt or share in quilting someone elses quilt, or folks who just want to come and see what a Quilting Bee is like!

There will be several ways to attend the event.

VIP Attendees will have access all of the events - the Dessert reception, Workshops, Stop-bys, The Quilting Bee, the Visions Evening, the Shop Hop, the Awards Presentations, and any other events or goodies that are planned.

Quilter Attendees will have access to all of the onsite events including the workshops, Stop-bys, The Quilting Bee, and the Awards Presentation. We are working on getting some entertainment during the event, and you ticket will give you access to that as well.

Those who attend the event as a Quilter can join the Shop Hop for an additional nominal fee.

Quilting Bee Attendees will have access to The Quilting Bee and may bring quilts to work on, come with needle and thimble in hand and work on others quilts, or come to enjoy watching an active Quilting Bee.

More information and registration will be forthcoming as detailed plans develop.

We are looking for helpers as well as attendees, and will continue to update this page with progress of the planning.

If you are interested in more information or would like to help plan the event, please contact us: info@how-to-quilt.com

See you at The Quilting Bee!

Lots of Helpers Needed!

There are several main categories of activities that I've divided into smaller, bite-size units. Below is the overall organization of the event and some of the categories of helpers. . . . keep reading
Schedule of Events for the Quilting Bee
And the survey said - - - - that most quilters were interested in a 4 day event during the Spring. It turns out that National Quilting Day is the 3rd Saturday in March, which sounded like a perfect day to host an International Quilting Bee right here in San Diego - since the weather . . . keep reading

"When I have been having problems getting in the mood to work on my quilts that I am committed to finishing by August I just have to check in at the quilting site and I'm back in the mood. It has been wonderful."

"I have recently discontinued my membership, but strongly feel the need to say that you have certainly had a huge influence on my life. Your internet quilting club has given me wings as a quilter. The reason I am discontinuing my membership isn’t because I am not satisfied with what I’ve gained from it, it’s because I’ve got so much to do – it will take me more than two years to complete it all. (I’m a slow quilter ok!) I have not got so many UFO’s (trust me, there are a few hidden safely away!) as that I have WDHT’s (wanna-do-haven’t-had-time’s).

Thank you Penny – your inspiration has been much appreciated.

Regards,"
