Machine Quilting the Jelly Roll Quilt
QuiltingCoach Penny
Once your quilt is layered and basted, you are ready for quilting. Because this quilt is made using batik fabric, bamboo batting and was basted using basting spray, the best method for quilting will be machine quilting. . . .

Backing and Layering the Jelly Roll Quilt
QuiltingCoach Penny
Because I had Jelly Roll strips left, I decided to create a backing using these strips. And because the strips were not long enough to go from top to bottom or from side to side, I decided it would be best to sew them together and create blocks for the backing of the quilt. . . .

Simple Sashing with Cornerstones Adds Interest
QuiltingCoach Penny
Cornerstones are squares of fabric that are pieced within the sashing and fit in at the corners of the blocks. Although I had seen cornerstones in quilts, the first time I used them in a quilt was when I ran out of fabric in a border. . . .

Quilting Basics - Beginner Quilting Block
QuiltingCoach Penny
Most patchwork quilts are made using a basic unit called a Block. Generally blocks are square, although they can be any shape the quiltmaker wants them to be -- rectangles, triangles, hexagons, diamonds; all are fairly common. . . .

Should You Pre-wash Your Quilting Fabric?
QuiltingCoach Penny
To tell you the truth, I had not really thought much about the question prior to a few months ago. Long ago, I took a quilting class, and the teacher told us to arrive at class with our fabric already washed and ready to cut. . . .

Wool Quilting Fabric

Tree of Life Quilt Block
QuiltingCoach Penny
In early American days, clipper ships brought cargoes of Indian and Persian cotton prints into western Atlantic ports. When quilt designers were looking for pattern ideas, the Tree of Life design, common to Oriental rugs, was easily converted to a quilt pattern. . . .

Scrap Quilt with Hearts
QuiltingCoach Penny
If you have ever made a scrap quilt, you might have noticed that, in some ways, it is more difficult to make than a quilt using all new fabric. Several years ago, I took a workshop and made the little heart wall hanging shown below. . . .

Appliqué Animals on a Quilt
QuiltingCoach Penny
Each year when my kids were in elementary school, their teachers were the recipients of a quilt. The design for the quilt generally came from an idea that they had, and we converted into a quilt. . . .

Irish Chain for a Baby Quilt
QuiltingCoach Penny
Irish Chain quilts are easy to make, and if you use soft pastels for your quilt, you can have a baby quilt in a short day, especially if you machine quilt or tie it. In this quilt, I used 2 inch squares for the patches in the 9 patch blocks, and simple whole squares of fabric to offset the 9 patches. . . .

Quilting Thread
QuiltingCoach Penny
As quilters, we sometimes fret over fabric selection to make the perfect quilt. Once we make up our mind, we grab matching thread and get to work. The truth is, we should probably put a little more time into our thread selection, too. This is especially important for beginning quilters. . . .

Patty
"When I have been having problems getting in the mood to work on my quilts that I am committed to finishing by August I just have to check in at the quilting site and I'm back in the mood. It has been wonderful."
Anna British Columbia, Canada
"I have recently discontinued my membership, but strongly feel the need to say that you have certainly had a huge influence on my life. Your internet quilting club has given me wings as a quilter. The reason I am discontinuing my membership isn’t because I am not satisfied with what I’ve gained from it, it’s because I’ve got so much to do – it will take me more than two years to complete it all. (I’m a slow quilter ok!) I have not got so many UFO’s (trust me, there are a few hidden safely away!) as that I have WDHT’s (wanna-do-haven’t-had-time’s).
Thank you Penny – your inspiration has been much appreciated.
Regards,"
