TOUR: Sample Quilting Article - Including a Video
Using this technique you can easily hide your knot inside your quilt.
Whether you are quilting, stitching on appliqué pieces or binding, or sewing on a label, when you hand sew, you probably want to hide the knot. With your needle threaded, take the tail end of the thread (the end where you want the knot to be) and wrap it around the needle 1-2 times. To do this, you will need to hold the tail in place while you are wrapping the thread around the needle.
Once that is done, pinch the tail and the wrapped thread between your thumb and forefinger. With your other hand, hold the point of the needle and pull, keeping hold of the threads wrapped around the needle as well. As you get close to the end of the thread, pinch your fingers a little tighter, and maybe even hold the tail end of the thread to set the knot. Your knot should be about 1/2" from the end of the thread. Sometimes the knot slides completely off the thread. Try again from the beginning.
