Quilting Design Idea for Medallion Quilt
Along with the though of actually machine quilting this quilt, thinking about a quilting design has presented some challenges. Possibly it has presented some challenges to others of you as well. At least I'm hoping that it is not for lack of interest that we have not received a zillion design possibilities. I decided to start the ball rolling - even somewhat late - with a design potential and references in Kathy Sandbach's book, Show me how to Plan My Quilting - which is what started this particular journey. Kathy presents some interesting design ideas, and when I combined her thoughts with the actual fabric and layout of the quilt, I made a few discoveries. One is that there are several floral and feather fabrics. Many of the whites have tiny flowers. And, although, many might not consider those florals in the truest sense of having big flowers that you can see from far away, it presented an idea of using a floral-type quilting design in the white fabrics. In this design idea, a leaf vine would thread through the white fabrics around the medallion. One of the green fabrics has a feather theme to it, suggesting that possibly a feather quilting design might work in the areas where that green fabric is. I have also included the feather design in the area that includes the blue and purple fabric. The blue border makes me think of sponges scattered through the ocean, and the quilting design in the border might suggest gentle currents in the ocean. Still missing from this proposal is a design for the center. It could be a circle of leaves, or a circular feather design, or ?? There are also some smaller areas that might do well with just some simple stippling. Your thoughts and ideas?? A picture of the design is posted in the Image Gallery so you can comment: http://www.thequiltingcoach.com/members/viewimage.cfm?ImgID=46 Tomorrow is another day, and may bring another design. This design makes the quilt more of a square than an medallion. A different design might emphasize the points of the medallion more. We'll see. Happy Quilting!
