Maybe you woke up one morning and decided to start your business. Possibly you’ve been thinking about it for years, but didn’t really know how to get started. As you walk into a quilt shop – or other business – and look around, it can be overwhelming thinking about everything that goes into the business: - Renting space for your shop
- Stocking your shop with enticing goodies for folks to buy
- Hiring people to help
- Making sure that things run smoothly
And those are just the things you see. Even before you start a business, you probably already know that there is much more to owning a business that isn’t quite so obvious. Often the biggest thing that stops people from “taking the leap” and beginning their own business is the unknown. After all, it’s not like you can easily walk up to a shop owner and start asking questions about their business and what it takes behind the scenes. Besides, even if they answer some of the questions, how do you know that they have good answers – or are sharing those with you? Maybe they are worried about the competition you might bring. And possibly, they really don’t know either. It all looks good on the surface, but behind the curtain, their books are a mess; their taxes aren’t paid; and the IRS is breathing down their back – simply because they didn’t fill out the forms correctly or they didn’t know they had to fill out the forms. You can avoid all of that by listening in on this Business in a Box Webinar – The “Business” Side of the Business. It’s not complicated, yet there are some critical items you MUST pay attention to, or you will have the IRS, your state Income Tax agency, or other government entities breathing down your throat. While you could plead ignorance, technically "Ignorance of the Law" is not an excuse. Your plea will be for mercy - a lower fine and, in extreme cases a "Stay out of Jail" card. You can avoid all of that by understanding just a few simple things and keep them in mind as you operate your business. Make your business life fun and easy - Start these good business practices from Day 1 by learning what to do. During this webinar, you will get information not many new business owners hear - until it's too late. Many call it the “boring stuff.” And it may be, but it won’t be boring when you get a letter from the IRS saying you owe a bazillion dollars in back taxes and penalties to boot. The topics for this webinar include: - Business licenses and permits – the kinds of permits and licenses you will and may need to operate your business and where to get them
- Accounting – how to keep good accounting records to stay legal and keep out of jail.
- Tax filings and reports – whether you have employees or not, there will be tax requirements
- Business expenses – keeping your personal and business life separate is important, yet there are ways to ensure that you get the most out of your business expenses whether you work exclusively outside your home or have an office or other work space in your home
By way of background, my education is in business finance, having earned both a B.S. and MBA in Finance and Business Economics from the University of Southern California. My other business experience includes work in Strategic Planning and Analysis for Honeywell Computers (way back in the 1970s) and MAI international – both in the computer industry. In addition, I was a certified and licensed tax preparer for both the IRS and the state of California for 5 years, working with CPAs during tax season in the preparation of tax returns for businesses, estates and individuals. The information presented will be based on my knowledge and experience in taxes and in operating a business. It is not intended to be complete tax or legal advice. Your individual situation will merit personal advice from a tax professional or lawyer! This is a general overview and not intended to include every aspect of starting or owning a business. It is intended to let you know that there are legal requirements to operating a business and give you a sense of what they are. This webinar will be held on Tuesday, January 24, beginning at 4 pm Pacific Time and will last about 1 1/2 hours. As always, once the presentation is finished, you will be able to ask your questions live.
