Silhouettes have always fascinated me.

When Disneyland opened, I remember my mom and dad making me stand in line so they could get one of those paper cutout silhouettes done.

We waited hours in line, and at the end, we got a little black paper cutout of my head.

I watched as the guy took his scissors to a square piece of paper and, snip, snip, cut away paper to end up with a shape that looked exactly like my face and curly pony tail.

That probably began my fascination with silhouettes.

How can just a little black paper cutout look so much like a person that you can tell who it is - well, at least if you know the person and the context.

That single silhouette hung on the wall in my parents' bedroom for years. Then quilting daughter, Stephanie, was born.

Little did Stephanie and I know that when she turned 7, she would get to stand in line on Main Street in Disneyland, so my mom and dad could have a pair of silhouettes of 7 year olds (one generation apart) side by side.

The most interesting part is that my mom was able to convince Stephanie to stand in line. Probably a small price for a 7 year old to pay for a day or two at Disneyland!

I've been transferring photos onto fabric for years, and making all kinds of quilts - flannel quilts, memory quilts, thank you quilts. And, by now I thought I had seen it all.

But, recently I came across a new book by Louise Handley - Fabric Silhouettes; Quilted Treasures from the Family Album.

I'll admit when I first saw it, I thought it was yet another way to transfer photos onto fabric, and I was quite fascinated.

Then when I took a second look, I discovered that this is something quite different, and equally fascinating.

Using Louise's process, you create silhouettes on fabric from your favorite photos, and then attach them to a fun background fabric that sets the tone for the quilt.

What a special way to preserve your most precious moments!

Like traditional silhouette profile portraits, these quilts create striking likenesses of your loved ones.

Use novelty prints to focus on a theme or event and create a beautiful, artistic setting for your contemporary silhouette. It's easier than it looks, and the process is fun!

Plus you can take several photographs and combine the images to create a perfect memory.

Getting your silhouette made is really as easy as 1 - 2 - 3:

  1. Start with an ordinary snapshot
  2. Enlarge and transfer the key figures to fabric
  3. Stitch to a special fabric background and finish your quilt

Do you have family photos that are torn or worn? If you scan them into your computer and then transfer them to fabric, unless you can do some fancy touching upon your computer, you are likely to transfer all of the imperfections of your photos onto the fabric, making it look like you didn't know what you were doing.

Why not make silhouettes with those imperfect photos?

Louise makes this so easy. She explains how to choose the right photo and how to adjust the photo so it will work. She walks you through the steps to make a dramatic wall hanging that will bring back fond memories for your family and friends.

If you are looking for something unique, a silhouette quilt could be the holiday gift you are looking for.

By now lots of folks have seen quilts with photos transferred onto fabric, and made into quilt blocks. But how many of your family and friends have seen a fabric silhouette in a quilt or wall hanging?

This year, you don't need to spend a fortune on holiday gifts. Using small pieces of fabric from your stash, you can make several of these wall hangings, give the most unique gifts of the holiday season, and have fun making them.

Your investment of a tiny $20.95 will get you started making these unique gifts for any occasion. You'll see a beautiful wall hanging given to a couple with a wedding memory. This isn't just for the holidays - you'll have this resource all year around - for birthdays, births, or just to say "Hi!"
